Lady Trojans win one, lose one to start tournament

On Monday night Girard faced off against Erie in the first game of the Wilson County Tournament hosted by Neodesha. The Lady Trojans built a nine-point lead in the first period and never looked back. At the end of the first Girard had a 15-6 advantage, led by Ashley Ray’s six points. Girard was outscored 6-8 in the second quarter, with their only points coming from a Carly Heatherly trey, a two-point bucket from Calea Augustin, and a free throw from Hannah Jones. Going into halftime the Lady Trojans were leading 21-14. The third quarter was another in which the Lady Trojans were outscored, this time 6-11. Schyler Nepote, Jones, and Heatherly each had two points in the period. Heatherly played a huge part in sealing the victory in the fourth, as she hit seven of nine free throws. At the sound of the final buzzer, the Lady Trojans held a 36-30 win.
Girard ran into the undefeated Lady Chargers of Cherryvale in the second round on Tuesday night. Cherryvale sprinted out to a huge lead after the first half, and Girard’s second-half attempt at a comeback fell short. In the first quarter Girard was only able to score three points thanks to a Herlocker two-point basket and a free throw from Jones. They were down 15-3 at the end of the period. The offense turned it up some in the second, but the defense wasn’t quite there as Girard was outscored 16-8. Jones had four in the quarter to go along with two points from both Nepote and MaCahla Leslie, but Girard was down 31-11 at the half. Improvement was shown in the third quarter as the Lady Trojans outscored Cherryvale 11-9. Leslie scored six more in the third, while Olivia Hanson put in three points and Augustin had two. Although Girard outscored their opponent 10-5 in the fourth, the game ended in a 45-32 loss. Heatherly scored all eight of her points in the final quarter, including two three-pointers.
With the loss the Lady Trojans will play Caney on Friday in the third-place contest in the North Gym at approximately 4:45.
