Trojans advance to Wilson County Tournament Championship

By Nick Corn

With victories in their first two games of the Wilson County Tournament, the Girard Trojans will be playing Independence on Friday night at approximately 8:15 in the North Gym.  In their first game of the tournament on Monday night versus Erie, the Trojans jumped out to a 15-5 lead after the first and were up 30-10 at halftime.  In the first quarter of action, the scoring was pretty even for the Trojans as Devin Alters and Laike Damman had four apiece, Drew Davied had three points, and Kross Hamblin and Garrett Bailey each had two points.  The second period was another big one for Girard as Davied scored nine points to pace the Trojans and take the big lead into halftime.  The Red Devils stepped up their offense a bit in the third quarter, but Girard was still able to take the quarter 15-13.  Davied put in another five points in the period.  The fourth was a defensive-minded quarter for both teams, as they each scored six points.  The Trojans took the game 51-29.

On Tuesday night Girard met up with Caney in the second round, and took advantage of a huge second half to take a big victory.  Laike Damman did his best to keep the Trojans close in the first quarter, scoring seven of the nine total points for Girard, but they still found themselves down 12-9 at the end of the period.  By halftime Girard was able to cut the lead to 18-17, thanks in large part to two three-pointers; one from Bailey and another from Davied.  The second half proved to be a much different ballgame as Girard outscored the Bullpups 30-8 in the last two quarters.  Tyler Green led the attack in the third quarter with six points, while Eaton and Damman had three points each, and Hamblin scored two.  Alters and Davied each scored six points in the fourth quarter, including a three from Alters, while Damman and Hamblin both had two points.  Caney was held to only two points in the fourth, capping a Girard 47-26 win.

With the two victories, the Trojans improved their overall record to 5-5 on the year, with the Wilson County Tournament Championship on the line Friday night.
