Although Girard lost to Coffeyville Friday night, head coach Brad Herlocker called it his team’s best game of the season.
Herlocker said his team did a great job breaking Coffeyville’s pressure, but the Lady Trojans missed too many make-able shots. Still, after one quarter Girard led 16-9 and 31-27 at halftime. The third quarter was the deciding factor in the game, as Coffeyville outscored Girard 14-7.
The teams were tied in the fourth quarter, but the damage had been done and Coffeyville took the game, 57-54. “I’m so proud of the heart and effort the girls showed tonight,” said Herlocker, “Coffeyville has some really nice players and made plays when they needed to.” Calea Augustine led Girard with 17 points. Augustine has been hot too heading into winter break, averaging 18 points per game in the last three. Sydnee Crain scored 15 against Coffeyville, and Ashley Ray added 9.
With the loss, Girard fell to 2-3 on the year, but has put together some strong games heading into the break. The Lady Trojans will come back to the hardwood on January 6 when they will host Oswego.
