Trojans cruise to district win
Girard traveled to Anderson County begin district play and start setting the playoff picture. While two more games have to be played before the table is set for playoffs, the Trojans got the job done in week seven as they defeated the 3-3 Bulldogs 35-8 in a dominant performance.
Girard opened the game with the ball, and their first drive did not go as planned. The Trojans were forced to a three-and-out punt. After the Bulldogs reached two first downs on their initial drive of the game, the Trojans forced a punt. Girard’s first touchdown drive was fueled by 32 rushing yards on two carries from Eric Wilson, and 20 yards on three carries from Trey Eaton. Eaton’s third carry of the drive resulted in a 14-yard touchdown to put Girard up 7-0. After a Bulldog fumble, the Trojan’s quickly held a two touchdown lead early in the second quarter when Wilson kept the ball for a four-yard touchdown run.
After another Anderson County punt, Eaton gained 32 yards on two carries to set the Trojans up for their third score when Wilson connected with Junior Lindbloom for an 11-yard touchdown completion. The Bulldogs took their next drive into Trojan territory, but the Girard defense stood strong for a fourth-down stop to give the offense a shot at four straight touchdown drives. Girard started their drive on their own 31, and on the ninth play of the drive, Wilson found Lindbloom again, this time for a 19-yard touchdown. Girard led 28-0 at halftime.
An inspired Bulldog football team showed up early in the second half and had no trouble finding the endzone on their first drive. After just six plays, Anderson County put six on the board with a one-yard carry. The two-point conversion was successful, and Girard’s lead was cut to 28-8. Girard responded in just two plays, when Eaton busted off a 52-yard run to find the endzone and extend the Trojan lead to four touchdowns.
The final four Bulldog drives resulted in a punt, two failed fourth-down attempts, and an intercepted pass by Trojan defensive back Isaiah Fisher. The Trojans’ last four drives ended in two punts, a lost fumble recovered by the Bulldogs, and a kneel-down to end the game.
With the win, the Trojans improved to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in district play. Next week, the Trojans will host the 3-4 Burlington Wildcats. Burlington is coming off a 28-23 loss at the hands of Iola.
