Trojan teams whip up on Prairie View

BY NICK CORN

Girard hosted the Prairie View Buffaloes on the hardwood Friday night, and both Trojan varsity teams used big second-half defensive performances to earn big wins. With double-digit leads heading into the 3rd quarter, both Girard teams allowed only six points to their opponent in the second half.

A first-quarter trey from Sydnee Crain gave the Lady Trojans an early 7-0 lead in the first game of the night. Olivia Hanson added a pair of free throws and a layup to give Girard an 11-0 lead before the Lady Buffaloes could get on the board with a three-pointer. After Prairie View cut the lead to six points, Ashley Ray hit a shot from the paint to give Girard a 17-9 lead heading into the second.

Both offenses were stymied in the second quarter, as Prairie View outscored Girard 6-5 in the quarter. The Lady Buffaloes cut the lead to just four points before Crain’s second trey of the night would give the Lady Trojans a 22-15 lead at halftime.
Girard’s shutdown defense in the third quarter helped them to score the first eight points of the second half. Ray’s second straight basket gave Girard a 15-point lead, and that lead stretched to 37-20 by the end of the third quarter.
The defensive effort continued in the fourth, as the Lady Trojans allowed just one point on their way to a 48-21 victory. Ray lead the team with 12 points, while Hanson added 11 and Crain scored 10.

Boys win big
The boys’ game featured much of the same narrative throughout the second contest. Both teams traded baskets to an 8-8 tie before Laike Damman scored five straight points for Girard. An old-fashioned three-point play from Junior Lindbloom gave Girard a six-point lead, and a Tyler Green three-point buzzer-beater put the Trojans up 19-10 at the end of one.

While the Trojans slowed offensively in the second quarter, their opponent did as well. A Lindbloom trey put the Trojans up by 12 points, and Damman scored the last two baskets of the half to give Girard a 31-15 lead heading into the intermission.
The third quarter was the start of the Drew Davied show. Davied started the Trojan scoring with a layup and free throw after being fouled on the make, and a three from the wing gave him his eighth point of the quarter. He picked up several points on offensive rebounds, and by the end of the quarter, Davied totaled 14 points to bring his total to 19. While Davied was lighting up the scoreboard, the Trojans were collectively playing stifling defense. The Buffaloes totaled just four third-quarter points.

Another old-fashioned three from Davied gave the Trojans a 32-point lead, enabling a running clock for the remainder of the game. Davied’s 23rd and 24th points of the game were the Trojans’ last, as he soared for a two-handed jam to put an exclamation on the Girard victory. The Trojans would win 53-21.
The Trojans (6-0) and Lady Trojans (5-1) will travel to Columbus Tuesday before heading to Fort Scott on Friday night.
