St. Paul wins one, loses one against Frontenac

The St. Paul Indians’ girls and boys basketball teams moved their records to 8-1 and 6-3, respectively, after matchups against the Frontenac Raiders Friday, Jan. 12.

During the girls’ game, the Indians were met with strong opposition initially but pushed through as the game progressed to earn the victory.

In the first quarter, Frontenac and St. Paul were neck-and-neck, scoring 13 points each.

St. Paul earned the lead in the second quarter by overpowering the Raiders offensively. After scoring 14 additional points and allowing Frontenac to score only nine, the Indians led 27-22 at halftime.

As the third quarter rolled around, defense became a major key for both teams. St. Paul fought past Frontenac’s defense to score eight more points, while the Raiders managed six points.

The fourth quarter was a race to the victory for both teams. Frontenac came out much more aggressive and scored 16 points, but St. Paul’s 13 points allowed them to maintain their lead.

With a final score of 48-44, St. Paul earned their eighth victory of the season.

Katelin O’Brien led the Indians’ offense throughout the night, scoring 17 individual points.

On the boys’ side, St. Paul was confronted with one of their strongest opponents yet.

The Indians’ struggled to develop an offense in the first quarter and could only score six points, while Frontenac scored 18 to quickly establish a large lead.

During the second quarter, it was much of the same as the Raiders scored 17 more points and allowed St. Paul to score only eight.

Frontenac remained relentless in the third quarter and scored 17 more points, but the Indians continued to fight and scored eight points.

St. Paul scored 11 additional points in the fourth quarter, but Frontenac matched that to bring the final score to 33-63.

Braven Born led the Indians’ offense against Frontenac by scoring 11 points, and Brenden Doherty was close behind with 10 points.

The Indians will now move on to compete in the Southeast Lancer Classic in Cherokee, beginning Monday, Jan. 15.

Monday, St. Paul’s girls will be taking on Columbus while the boys will face Parsons.
