A Pittsburg State student died last night (May 5) just over 24 hours before her graduation.

Ashly Erickson, 23, collapsed while celebrating the completion of her studies with her friends at the bar 505, located at 505 N. Broadway, Pittsburg.

Erickson suffered injuries from her collapse. Crawford County EMS responded, but she died en route to the hospital. Pittsburg Police said Friday that she did not die of alcohol-related causes.

Erickson’s sorority said it will provide assistance to her local Alpha Gamma Delta chapter, Epsilon Kappa.

Her commencement ceremony had been set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday (May 7). Erickson studied marketing and management at Pitt State’s Kelce College of Business. She is originally from Wamego, in north-central Pottawatomie County.

“We mourn her sudden and tragic passing,” it said in a social media statement. “We are working with the university and chapter leaders to support our members during this difficult time. Our hearts are with our Epsilon Kappa sisters, Ashly’s friends and family, and the entire Pittsburg State community.”

Steve Scott, university president, offered his condolences in a press release.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ashly’s family and friends,” said Scott. “There are few things in life more difficult than losing a loved one, especially someone so young and full of life. I extend my deepest sympathies and offer condolences on behalf of the entire Pittsburg State University community.”
