Obituary: Esther Jeanette (Mann) Houk

Esther Jeanette Houk
1947-2020

Esther Jeanette (Mann) Houk passed away on February 29, 2020 at North Point Skilled Nursing in Paola, KS. Esther was born August 10, 1947 at Rockville, MO to Oma Royal & Thelma Pearl (Goodman) Mann. She attended El Dorado Springs schools and graduated from El Dorado Springs High School.

Esther married Doyle Dennis Houk on June 17, 1967 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church near El Dorado Springs, MO. Esther and her family faithfully attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where her Dad sometimes preached. During their young married life, Esther and Doyle moved to Erie, KS where they made their home and raised their two children, Brent and Christi. Doyle preceded Esther in death September 28, 2011.

Esther worked for Dr. Jimmie Buller for years, and then for Dr. Sonya Culver at the Erie Medical Clinic until her retirement. She was an avid bowler and went on many fun trips with her bowling girls. She also enjoyed playing cards, reading, and gardening and canning with Doyle. She enjoyed quilting, and was quite the seamstress, making her own wedding dress. Esther loved spending “sister weekends” with her four sisters, exploring antique stores and visiting with her brothers. Perhaps her favorite thing to do was spending time with her six grandchildren. They all have such fond memories of “Grandma Houk” and will miss her dearly. Esther moved to Paola, KS in 2013 and became a resident of North Point in December 2017.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Bonnie Houk of Girard, KS; her daughter and son-in-law, Christi and Jimmy Hay of Paola, KS; six grandchildren – Logan Houk of Girard; Morgan Houk of Lawrence; Landen, Lily, Lawson and Lucy Hay of Paola; brothers, Lynn (Judy) Mann, El Dorado Springs, MO; Mike (Linda) Mann, El Dorado Springs, MO; sisters, Dora (Emmitt) Dameron, Vassar, KS; Lora (Glen) Fleener, Vernal, UT; Debbie (Donnie) Rice, Lamar, MO; and Karen (Michael) Estes, Colorado Springs, CO; and sister-in-law, Janice Mann Black (Winchester, OH); members of Doyle’s family, and many nieces and nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Doyle, and her brother, Roy Mann.
