Girard faced the Lady Raiders of Frontenac Saturday night in the sub-state championship for a chance to head to Emporia for the 4A-II state tournament. The Lady Trojans were tested but when the final buzzer sounded the scoreboard read 50-30 in favor of Girard.
With 7 points from Sydnee Crain and 6 from Calea Augustin in the first quarter, Girard captured an early 15-9 lead after one. By hafltime that lead was extended to the tune of 25-17.
Girard was tested in the third when Augustin and Ashley Ray were each sidelined with their fourth foul within 30 seconds of the second half. After an early 10-point Girard lead, Frontenac mounted a comeback by scoring 7 unanswered points to cut their deficit to three. Lauren Franklin ended the Lady Raider run with a bucket nearing the end of the third. Despite scoring just four points in the entire third quarter, the Lady Trojans led by five heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw Augustin and Ray reenter the contest in what was the turning point of the game. The Lady Trojans offense caught fire in the following minutes by outscoring Frontenac 21-6, earning a huge 20-point victory and a trip to Emporia.
The Lady Trojans were led in scoring by Augustin’s 15. Crain added 13 points, and Hanson scored 10.
With the win, Girard will now head to Emporia State University for their second straight 4A-II state tournament. The two-seed Trojans (20-2) will play seven-seed Burlington (17-5) at White Auditorium on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Whoever prevails in that game will go on to face the winner of Topeka-Hayden (19-3) and Haven (18-4) on Friday at 3 p.m.
