Lady Indians overpower Titans

            Closing the regular season, Feb. 21, the Lady Indians captured a 65-36 victory over Yates Center (9-10). St. Paul captured its fourth straight win sophomore Elise Doherty scoring 13 for the Lady Indians. Following the victory, the Lady Indians moved onto the 1A Regional held at Moran-Marmaton Valley. 

            Receiving a first-round bye, St. Paul moved onto the semifinal where they faced Leroy-Southern Coffey County (7-15) Friday, Feb. 28. The two teams last faced each other Feb. 12, 2018, where the Lady Indians were defeated 67-32. 

            It was a team effort in the first quarter as six different St. Paul players were in the scoring column. The Lady Indians aggressive, relentless defense held the Titans to just three points in the first quarter as well as five in the second. At halftime, St. Paul led Southern Coffey Co. 38-8. 

            St. Paul was allowed to only 11 points in the second half but the lead became too large for the Titans to mount a comeback as St. Paul ran away with the semifinal, 49-18. A number of Lady Indians contributed to the victory including; senior Katie Coomes (9), freshman Josey Harris (9), senior Emily Hutcherson (8), senior Taylor Wiatrak (8), and sophomore Elise Doherty (7). 

            The Lady Indians (17-4) move onto the 1A regional championship where they face Chetopa (12-8) Saturday, Feb. 29 at 6 p.m. at Moran-Marmaton Valley HS.
