They always say it is difficult to defeat a team multiple times in a season. In their third meeting, the Baxter Springs Lions proved that to be the case for the No. 1 ranked team in 4A-II, Girard Trojans.
Laike Damman started the night with a triple and Drew Davied scored seven first-quarter points to give the Trojans a 16-12 advantage after one.
After not trailing in the first, the Trojans found themselves down 24-21 after the Lions splashed in a trey to get the Baxter crowd on their feet. The Trojans would retake the lead when Isaiah Fisher pulled down an offensive board and put it back up for two. Baxter would quickly regain the lead with a pair of free throws. At the half the game was knotted up at 28 all.
A Damman three to start the third was matched by a Lion triple. After falling down by three, the Trojans scored 7 unanswered to take a four-point lead, this time they would not give it back.
With many key players in foul trouble for the Lions, Girard’s advantage wouldn’t fall below three points in the final eight minutes. Davied scored 12 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Trojans.
Girard would go on to win 69-60, securing the one-seed at the 4A-II state tournament with their unblemished record. They will face eight-seed Baldwin (7-15) on Thursday at 3 p.m. in White Auditorium in Emporia. The winner of that game will go on to play the winner of Wichita-Collegiate (19-3) and Pratt (15-7) on Friday at 4:45 p.m.
