Wayne F. Huning, 79 of Houston died peacefully surrounded by family March 1, 2018 at his home. He was born February 6, 1939 in Girard, Kansas, son of Marvin and Matilda Huning.
He was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Nassau Bay, Texas. He graduated from Girard High School in 1956 and graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan Kansas with an engineering degree in 1961.
Wayne proudly supported the space program as an Apollo flight controller. That was followed by a long career spanning the space shuttle and space station programs, including managerial positions, preserving space program history, and working with early career employees.
Wayne never met a stranger. He lived his faith daily, helping people joyfully. He found pleasure in the simple things, fishing, farming, fellowship, and sports – especially Kansas State. He celebrated family at every opportunity, cherishing each moment.
Survivors include his wife Kay Huning of the home, son Steven and wife Therese Huning and 3 grandchildren Courtney & Nicole of Friendswood and Tyler Huning of Plano, daughter Angela and husband Mark Woirol of Ivanhoe, Illinois, son Ross Huning of Freeport, Florida, sister Marilyn and husband Edgar VonSoosten, and nieces Sherry Jagels and husband Phil, Lorie Greenlee and husband Mark, and Kay James and husband Jeff.
