St. Paul wins one, loses one against Northeast

The St. Paul Indians’ girls and boys basketball teams moved their overall records to 10-2 and 8-5, respectively, after interesting matchups against the Northeast Vikings last night.
During the girls’ game, St. Paul had no issue overpowering the Vikings.
In the first quarter, the Indians wasted no time establishing a lead, scoring 15 points and holding Northeast to six.

Northeast made a strong eight-point run in the second quarter, but St. Paul topped this with nine points to move the score to 24-14.
After the half, the Indians were relentless and added another 20 points to their score while allowing Northeast to score only six.
With a 44-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Indians were worry-free. St. Paul cruised through the last quarter and the final score was brought to 55-24.
Taylor Wiatrak led the Indians’ offense throughout the night, scoring 18 individual points.
On the boys’ side, things were a bit more interesting between St. Paul and Northeast.
In the first quarter, St. Paul put up 20 points while Northeast scored 16, but it quickly became obvious this was going to be a very physical game.
Northeast made a solid run in the second quarter and scored 25 points, while the Indians kept a one-point lead after scoring 22 points.
At the end of the first half, St. Paul had already collected 14 fouls while Northeast had 12.
Defense became a huge factor in the third quarter, as both teams struggled to find many points. Northeast stole the lead this quarter with 10 additional points, while St. Paul could only manage five.

Fouls began catching up to the Indians in the fourth quarter and Northeast took advantage of this. Despite struggling, St. Paul scored 14 more points, but the Vikings scored 18 to bring the final score to 61-69.
At the end of the second half, St. Paul had collected 16 more fouls plus two technical fouls. Four of the Indians’ players fouled out.
Northeast collected 10 more fouls in the second half and only had two players foul out.
Despite having their overall record moved to 7-5, St. Paul’s boys’ league record stands at 4-1.
The St. Paul Indians’ next matchup will be Tuesday, Jan. 30 in Pleasanton.
