Gertrude I. McKinney, 100, of Parsons, and a former Dennis resident, passed away early Monday morning, January 30, 2017 at Woodridge Estates in Parsons.
She was born on January 18, 1917 at Parsons to Ralph and Reba (Woodmansee) Phillips. She grew up on the family farm near Dennis and attended country and Dennis schools graduating from Dennis High School in 1936.
She and Edward John “Ed” McKinney were married on February 12, 1941 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on January 4, 2004.
She lived on the family farm near Dennis for many years where she was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She moved to Woodridge Estates in June of 2015.
She served on the Osage Township Election Board, the Morehead school board, and was an assessor for the Osage Township.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church until its closure and a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She was in the Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella serving as past regent. She was also a member of the Farmers Union and the Big D Senior Citizens.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, baking, and taking care of her chickens
She is survived by her sons, John McKinney, and his wife, Lyn of Anaheim, CA, Marvin McKinney, and his wife, Gay of Parsons, Dwaine McKinney, and his wife, Mary of Wichita, Alfred McKinney, and his wife, Sarah of Littleton, Co, Father Floyd McKinney of Girard; her daughters, Catherine Sullivan, and her husband, Jack of Hamilton, OH, Marilyn Ray, and her husband, Rick of Parsons, and Connie Adams, and her husband, Tony of Parsons; 19 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren; her brother, Dale Phillips and his wife, Irene of Dennis; her sister, Leona Cruse of Parsons; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Anjie McKinney; a great grandson, Kevin; a brother, Leonard Phillips; two sisters, Esther Journot and Mildred Sperry; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda McKinney.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, February 3, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Bishop Carl Kemme and Priests of the Wichita Diocese concelebrating. Burial will follow in the Calvary Cemetery. The Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with visitation following the rosary from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home 112 N. 26th St., P.O.
