The 2016 Girard High School track teams took a clean sweep at the CNC League Meet Thursday, May 12, at Frontenac High School, winning both the boys’ and girls’ titles.
Both teams have seemingly dominated the CNC since its formation. This was the 20th straight title for the girls, the 29th overall. For the boys, this was their 4th straight championship and their 48th overall.
On the girls side, junior Cailie Logue leveled the field in all four of her races, taking first in the 400-, 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Logue holds numerous records at GHS for the track and cross-country seasons and has also won numerous state championships.
Following right behind Cailie was fellow junior Layne Karhoff who took second in the 800 and 1600 as well as a 3rd place finish in the 800.
On the field side of events, senior Brooke Casley won the javelin and shotput. Casley has recently signed with Pittsburg State University to throw next season.
Other league champions include Rachel Stephan, 1st in the 200, and Elizabeth Crumpacker, 1st in the discus. Stephan also placed 2nd in the 400 while Crumpacker placed 4th in shotput.
Those who also earned points for the girls include Mya Mcleod, 6th in the 200 and 6th in the 400; Mary Zimmerman, 4th in the 800; Ilyanna Knopp, 4th in discus; Jaylynn Blythe, 2nd in high jump; Belle Bennett, 3rd in javelin; Heidi Burns, 5th in long jump; Hartly Merrell, 2nd in pole vault; and Jayme Williams, 5th in shotput.
The Girard girls 4×100 team placed 2nd, while the 4×400 and 4×800 teams placed 3rd.
The always dominant Girard boys also had a very strong showing, with senior Laike Damman taking first in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races and being apart of the 4×400 team that also placed first.
With his 49.71 time in the 400 meter race, Damman set a new school record that stood for over a decade.
Fellow seniors Jon Zimmerman and Drew Davied also became league champions in the 3200 and high jump respectively. Davied recently signed to join the Gorilla track and field team at PSU next season.
Trey Eaton also won the 300 intermediate hurdles, placed 2nd in the 110 hurdles and 3rd in the 200.
