The 4A-II third-ranked Lady Trojans and the second-ranked Trojan basketball teams made the short trek to Cherokee Friday night for their second league contests of the season. The Lady Trojans met up with a depleted Lady Lancer team that saw only one substitute on the bench and four freshman starters. The boys faced a scrappy outside-shooting Lancer team that hung around before Girard would pull away, winning by 28 points.
Lady Trojans
The Lady Trojans began the night on a 12-2 run, with all of their points coming in the paint. A Calea Augustin trey put Girard up 15-4 early on. Augustin followed her three point basket with a layup on the next possession to extend the lead. Sydnee Crain’s fourth layup of the quarter put the Lady Trojans’ advantage at 19-4 after one.
Girard continued to dominate the second quarter. After a Lady Lancer free throw the Lady Trojans went on a 14-0 run that was stopped only by a Southeast free throw with 41 seconds remaining in the half. Olivia Hanson, Ashley Ray, and Lauren Franklin each contributed four points to the 16-point quarter and it was 35-6 in favor of Girard at the half.
Southeast opened the third quarter with a three but it was all Girard the rest of the game. The Lady Trojans scored 12 unanswered points to go up 35, enabling a running clock and a quick fourth quarter.
After Allyssa Gardner started with an old-fashioned three-point play, Southeast would go on to outscore Girard’s reserves 9-3 in the final eight minutes. The Lady Trojans steamrolled to a 29 point, 50-21 victory.
Crain led the team with 12 points, most coming off steals in transition, Augustin added 11 points with Hanson and Ray each scoring eight.
Southeast hangs around, Trojans still dominate
After a Laike Damman triple was answered by Southeast, the Trojan defense put up an 11-0 run that was capped off by a Garrett Bailey bucket. Southeast proved that they were in the game and played tough early on, ending the first on a 10-4 run and staying within five points of the Trojans.
Girard started the second with five points from Eric Wilson and baskets from Tyler Green and Drew Davied. However, the Lancers would not go away, nailing back-to-back treys to cut Girard’s lead down to seven. Damman started another Trojan run with a triple and a layup before Davied hit two free throws to push it a 15-point lead. After the Lancers hit a free throw and then a two, Damman ended the quarter with a deep trey for his 16th point of the game, and the Trojans began pulling away with a 43-28 halftime advantage.
After a Southeast free throw, Davied and Damman hit baskets to quickly put Girard up by 18 points. Southeast continued to battle, but the Trojans were too much. Davied’s buzzer beating two pointer killed any type of momentum for Southeast and Girard would hold the 18 point lead at the end of three.
Damman extended the Trojans’ lead to 21 with an old fashioned three to start the fourth. Wilson then nailed a trey, capping off a 15-4 Trojan run. Girard finished the game with two free throws from Junior Lindbloom, adding to what was a 77-49 victory for the undefeated Trojans. Damman led the team with 23 points, while Wilson scored a season-high 17, followed by Davied with 16.
Both Girard teams will look to defend their undefeated league records on Tuesday when they host Columbus. Earlier in the season the Lady Trojans defeated Columbus 61-33, and the boys earned an 59 point, 85-26 victory.
