Columbus cruises over Girard
Columbus flexed their muscles Friday night, gaining an unofficial 601 yards of offense against Girard’s 320 yards, which fueled the Titans to a 61-21 victory to stay undefeated.
The first quarter featured the Titans’ offensive explosiveness, and while the Trojans were able to move the ball on offense, Columbus came up with two key fourth-down stops to reverse any Trojan momentum. On Girard’s first drive, the Trojans used two third-down conversions, one on a twelve-yard pass from Eric Wilson to Jordan Hopson, and one on a 16-yard rush from Trey Eaton, to move the ball to the Columbus 20 yard-line. On fourth-and-two to go, the Columbus defense stuffed Eaton to take the ball for their first drive. Trey Robinson connected with Jace McDown on their first play of scrimmage for a 79-yard touchdown reception to take a 7-0 lead.
The Trojans responded and proved their first drive wasn’t a fluke, and after a 20-yard pass completion from Wilson to Junior Lindbloom, Eaton ran up the middle for a 35-yard touchdown and the Trojans tied the game at seven with 6:21 to play in the first quarter. Two plays later, Columbus was on the board again when Robinson connected with Keenan Stanley for a 49-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing drive, Wilson completed a 31-yard pass to Eaton on third-and-seven to keep the drive alive, and the Trojans moved the ball to the Titan 25 before another fourth down stop returned the ball to Columbus. The Titans would need just one play to find the endzone, when McDown took a 68-yard run all the way.
After a Trojan punt, McDown started the second quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run, and Columbus led 28-7. On their next drive, the Trojans moved the ball inside the Titans’ redzone, but the Columbus defense once again did not break, as McDown intercepted a Wilson pass to end the Trojans’ hopes of getting on the board. Girard forced a Columbus punt on the ensuing drive, but Wilson was intercepted again. The Trojan defense held strong for the second straight drive when they forced and recovered a Titan fumble. Columbus’s lead would stay at 28-7 entering halftime.
In the third quarter, the Titans solved the offensive woes felt in their last two drives of the first half, scoring five touchdowns in the 12-minute span. On just third second play of the half, McDown found the endzone from 52 yards out. Less than two minutes later, Columbus scooped up a Girard fumble for a 25-yard defensive touchdown.
Girard kept fighting, and Wilson and Eaton traded rushes to get the ball into Titan territory, but were faced with a fourth-and-twelve after Wilson was sacked. On a design pass, Wilson scrambled for a 35 yard gain to set himself up for a one-yard quarterback keeper to find the goal line. The Titans responded on the first play of the next drive, when McDown scored his fifth and final touchdown of the night, this time from 53 yards out. With 5:10 left in the third, the Titans held a 48-13 lead.
After a Trojan punt, the Titans scored on another 50-yard touchdown run, and quickly scored again from 26 yards out after recovering an onside kick. The rest of the third quarter and game featured backups, and the Trojans scored once more in the fourth quarter when Camden McFarland scored from 24 yards out.
Eaton led the Trojans with 110 yards on 24 carries, while Wilson added 58 yards on 16 carries. Wilson also completed 9 of 17 passes for 100 yards. Columbus totaled 426 rushing yards on 33 carries, including 240 yards on 12 carries from McDown, and they completed six of eight passes for 175 yards. With the win, the Titans improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Trojans fell to 2-2.
