Obituary: Jack H. Hackworth

Jack H. Hackworth, 90, of Girard, died at 12:34 p.m., Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at the West Ridge Retirement Community in Girard where he was a resident since October 23, 2004.
Jack was born March 10, 1926 at Girard, a son of Vernie “Buck” and Minnie (Duggan) Hackworth.
He grew up and attended schools in Girard.
Jack served in the US Navy as a machinist mate and welder on the SS Alabama during W.W. II before entering the US Army during the Korean Conflict.  He helped with the construction of the airfield at Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri before serving in the Army Engineer Corp in Mineral Wells, Texas.
Jack married Patricia Marie Graham on January 18, 1947 in Girard. Patricia preceded Jack in death on June 18, 2001.
After his military service, Jack and his father owned and operated Hackworth Transit before he worked at Forms Manufacturing, both of Girard.  Jack owned Hackworth Liquor Store in Girard for 18 years.
He worked for the City of Girard as a street and sewer superintendent and at the Girard Medical Center before retiring in 1988.
Jack was a member of the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars; a volunteer at the Girard Medical Center and a member and past assistant fire chief at the Girard Fire Department.
Jack and Pat enjoyed their home on Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma and Jack enjoyed his bird dogs, hunting, and Marty Robbins music.
Survivors include a niece, Terrie Royse, and her husband, Bruce, of Buffalo, Kansas; a nephew, James Schaid, his wife, Becky, and their daughter, Molly, of Spring Hill, Kansas; extended family and special friends George and Katie Stonerock, Tony Stonerock , and his wife, Rhonda, Vicki Couch, Anthony Stonerock, and his wife, Taylor, Aaron Stonerock, and his fiancé, Emily Westhoff, Chayce Couch, Chris Bradshaw, his wife, Stepanie, and Brenley, Casey Morris, and his wife, Alex,  Dave and Mary Crumpacker; Westridge staff Kathy Nelson, Wilma Schultz, Brenda Smith, and Melody Nelson; Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice staff Pastor Wayne Mason, Kathy Combs, Claudia Smith, and Renee Lomax.
Jack was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating.  Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with Military Honors given by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Parsons, Kansas.
Memorials are suggested to the Westridge Retirement Community and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743 where friends may call after 2 p.m., Thursday.
