Obituary: Mary Etta Smith

Mary Etta Smith, 82, of Farlington, died at 8:25 p.m., Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at the Westridge Retirement Community in Girard.  

Mary Etta was born July 28, 1935 at rural Walnut, a daughter of Albert and Mae (Johnson) Page.  She attended Walnut Grade School and graduated from Girard High School in 1953.  Mary Etta graduated from Fort Scott Community College and received her MS and BS Degrees from Pittsburg State University.

Mary Etta married Victor E. Smith on May 24, 1952 in the Kincaid Memorial Baptist Church in Girard.  He survives of the home.

Mary Etta was an English teacher at the junior and senior high schools in Fort Scott before retiring in 1995.

She was a member and past treasurer at the United Methodist Church in Farlington and she helped prepare the meals for annual election dinner that is held at the church.

Mary Etta enjoyed her family, flowers, gardening, and traveling.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, Victor, of the home, are a daughter, Vicki Sue O’Brien, and her husband, Martin, of St. Paul; her sons, Gregg  Smith, and his wife, Terry, of Girard, Jeff Smith, and his wife, Kim, of Girard, and Joe Curran, and his wife, Kim, of Farlington; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Etta was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bill Smith, on January 6, 1987; her brothers, Norman Page, Marion Page, Don Page, Alan Page, and Larry Page; her sisters, Lois Polhlopek, Verna Crismas, Virginia Price, Alene Geier, and Brenda Cuthbertson.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Dallas Peterson officiating.  Burial will be in the Farlington Cemetery.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Sunday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Bill Smith Memorial Bull Riding Scholarship at the Fort Scott Community College and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
