Marvin Lawrence Murphy, 73, of rural Girard, passed away at 9:53 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2016, in the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas surrounded by his family.
Marvin was born November 8, 1942 in Girard, a son of Lawrence and Virginia (McElwain) Murphy.
Marvin grew up working on the family farm and attended schools in Girard graduating from Girard High School.
Marvin married Helen Foster on September 25, 1966 in the United Methodist Church in Girard. Helen survives of the home.
He was a lifelong farmer and stockman at rural Girard and a charter member of the McCune and Girard Young Farmers Group, helping construct the pulling sled for area tractor pulls.
Marvin was a member of the Lebanon Methodist Church at rural Girard, served as a board member of the Rural Water District # 4 and Farm Bureau. He received awards for FFA Star Greenhand, the 1977 Star Eastern District Young Farm Family, the Goodyear Conservation Award in 1995, and a Soil Conservation Award in 2007.
Marvin enjoyed his granddaughters, working, tractor pulls, and country music.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Helen, of the home, are a son, Kenneth Murphy, and his wife, Victoria, of Girard; a daughter, Karen Cussimanio, and her husband, Josh, of Nevada, Missouri; brothers Calvin Murphy, and his wife, Cathy, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, Don Murphy, of Girard, and Richard Murphy, and his wife, Ramona, of Girard; sisters, Betty Gates, and her husband, Charlie, of Ringo, and Carol Hervey, and her husband, Tim, of Gravois Mills, Missouri.
Marvin was Pawpo to his granddaughters Laiken Cussimanio, Macy Cussimanio, Lauren Murphy, Miley Murphy, and Callie Murphy. Also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents.
Services for Marvin Murphy will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Dallas Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 10:00 a.m., Wednesday.
