The Crawford County Clerk’s Office wants to remind voters that changes to the schedule for Municipal Elections in Kansas have taken effect this year.
In 2016 the Kansas Legislature passed laws that change the election date for municipal elections from April to November starting in 2017. This new law also changes the filing deadline for candidates in these municipal elections to June 1, 2017, at noon.
Municipal elections include elections for city council / commission, school board, hospital district, extension district and other local governing boards. These are all non-partisan elections that have been held on the first Tuesday of April in odd numbered years and they will now be held on the first Tuesday following the first Monday of November in odd numbered years. The Kansas Legislature hopes that the movement of these elections to November will help to increase voter turnout.
Candidates for any of these positions must file for election in the office of the County Clerk by noon on June 1, 2017.
Information on the filing fees, deadlines and other requirements have been posted on the County’s website at www.crawfordcountykansas.org. In the Departments & Agencies drop down list, find the Elections Dept. and click on that link.
