After a blowout win over Erie and a close loss to Caney, the Lady Trojans found themselves playing for third place Friday night against Independence, in the Wilson County Classic.
Girard built a 12-7 lead behind Ashley Ray’s five first-quarter points, but Independence caught fire in the second, outscoring Girard 19-10 to take a 26-22 lead into the break.
Ray added six more points in the third quarter, and Girard was able to tie things up going into the fourth. The Lady Trojans outscored Independence 15-13 in the final quarter to take the 52-50 victory and third place at the Wilson County Classic. It would prove to be Ashley Ray’s night. She led Girard with 16 points and to add to her total, Ray rounded off a triple-double with double-digit blocks and rebounds as well. “Ashley Ray had probably her best game as a Trojan,” said Coach Herlocker. “She kept her composure despite many double teams; she is really hitting another gear.”
Calea Augustin and Sydnee Crain also scored 11 points for the Lady Trojans, helping improve their overall record to 6-5 on the year. Ray and Crain were named to the all-tournament team, and MaCahla Leslie and Katy Pitts were named to the all-academic team.
Next week, Girard will hit the road to take on Parsons on Tuesday, then Labette County on Friday.
