St. Paul’s undefeated record and chance to play for a state title came to a halt Friday night as the Lady Indians met up with a familiar foe in the Waverly Lady Bulldogs.
Jordyn Tuck cashed in a three to put St. Paul up 9-5 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs would find their groove on offense in the second, outscoring St. Paul 16-14.
Still, the Lady Indians held a 23-21 halftime advantage behind 10 points from Tuck.
The tides changed drastically in the third quarter, and they changed in a hurry. After going 0-9 from three-point range in the first half, the Lady Bulldogs connected on four shots from distance to quickly take a 12-point lead and the wind out of the Lady Indians’ sails.
St. Paul went on to score just four points compared to Waverly’s 18 in the third. The Lady Indians trailed 39-27 after three quarters, a deficit that was too much to overcome, and Waverly would go on to win 45-35.
St. Paul was led by Tuck’s 15 points and 11 from Josie Albertini, but had just two other players combine for nine points for their total.
With the loss, the Lady Indians will play in the consolation game for the third straight year. They face the two-seed Hoxie at 12:00 p.m today.
