With an open spot in their schedule, St. Paul and St. Mary’s Colgan matched up for the second straight year. The Lady Panthers took the win last season but it was St. Paul who came out on top Monday night, defeating the Lady Panthers 59-34.
For what was largely a defensive struggle most of the game, St. Paul held a slim 5-4 advantage midway through the first quarter. Heading into the second the Lady Indians were able to extend that lead to four points at 11-7. Jordyn Tuck went 4-4 from the charity stripe scoring six points and Katelin O’Brien hit a trey to spur the Lady Indians.
Josie Albertini added fuel to St. Paul’s momentum in the second quarter with two three-point plays; one the old fashioned way with a bucket and a foul, the other from downtown. The Lady Indians would begin to find some separation, outscoring Colgan 14-9 and headed into halftime with a 25-16 advantage.
Three minutes into the second half, Tuck hit a trey to give St. Paul a 30-20 lead, but Colgan outscored St. Paul 9-7 to end the period. Still, St. Paul held a 37-29 lead before the final eight minutes.
The fourth quarter sparked an insurgence of offense and it was all St. Paul. Seven Lady Indians combined to score 22 points while holding the Lady Panthers to just five. Treys from Tuck and Sydney Rice, along with a 6-6 performance as a team from the free-throw line carried St. Paul to a 59-34 victory and a still perfect record on the season. The Lady Panthers fell to 5-7.
Tuck led all scorers with 19 points while Albertini and Holly Hutcherson cracked double digits with 10 points apiece.
St. Paul is now 12-0 and will travel to Pleasanton (8-5) on Tuesday before ending the week in Oswego (9-5) on Friday night. The boys did not play Monday.
