Girard earns two wins at Wilson County Classic

The Trojan boys played first Monday night, a change of pace that didn’t seem to matter much in the outcome. In the first round of the Wilson County Classic, two-seed Girard took down Bluestem 75-60. The Trojans outscored Bluestem 17-12 in the first quarter, and went into halftime with a 28-26 lead.

Girard picked up the intensity on both ends of the court in the second half, pouring in 26 points in the third quarter, and they added 21 in the fourth to cruise to a 15-point victory. Drew Davied put in 24 points to be the game’s highest scorer, hitting nine two-point baskets and six free throws along te way. Laike Damman hit four treys in route to a 19-point game. Eric Wilson and Junior Lindbloom scored seven apiece for the Trojans.

Girard now stands at 9-0 and will take on three-seed Fredonia at 8:30 Tuesday night.

Lady Trojans move on
“We had quality shots, they just didn’t fall very well for us tonight,” said Coach Herlocker following Monday night’s first-round victory over Erie. “Our defense carries us through.” Defense did seem to be key in the Lady Trojans’ win, as they held the Lady Red Devils scoreless in the first quarter of the game.

After leading 10-0 after the first, Girard took a 19-4 lead into halftime. Erie was able to pull off their highest scoring quarter in the third with 10 points, but so did the Lady Trojans with 16 of their own. Holding a 21-point lead heading into the fourth, the Lady Trojans rolled on to a 48-21 victory. Sydnee Crain led the Lady Trojans with 13 points in the win, and Ashley Ray hit double digits with 10. Olivia Hanson added nine points, and Calea Augustin scored 8.

With the victory, Girard improved to 5-4 on the season. The five-seed Lady Trojans will face number-one seed Caney at 3:15 on Tuesday at Fredonia.
