Obituary: Linda L. “Shomaker” Foster
Mrs. Foster was born October 2, 1948 in Kansas City, Kansas the daughter of Orville J. and Ethel Lou Fouse Shomaker. The family later moved to Girard where she spent the remainder of her childhood and teenage years. She moved to Frontenac in 1989. Linda attended school in Girard where she graduated in 1966. She spent much of her childhood helping around the family business, Shomaker Service Station, that was ran by her grandparents, Herman and Olinda Shomaker and her Uncle Johnny Shomaker. Many wonderful memories and stories were made and shared during her times spent there. Linda was known by all that knew her as a kindhearted and caring person. She would help anyone that needed it, even if she didn’t have the capacity to do so. One of her biggest passions that became a reality was helping with the restoration of the Cato Church in Cato, Kansas. She and a friend spent countless hours restoring both the inside and outside of the church. She toiled over cleaning and preserving the beautiful, old, wooden pews inside the building. Her time was donated, she just wanted to see the finished product. She and the late John Spurling (an avid Cato Historian) were known to carry on quite the animated conversations during the hours spent there. Linda’s love for animals was unparalleled. There wasn’t a stray animal that she wouldn’t try and take care of and feed if it crossed her path and she thought she could help it. She supported the local SEK Humane Society and was a proud member of the Humane Society of the U.S. She might only have a dollar to give them, but she would make sure they received it before she spent it on herself. She was of the Lutheran Faith, and attended Trinity Lutheran Church of Girard. Linda was also a member of the Pittsburg American Post No. 64 Legion Auxiliary. Her poor health did not allow her to travel, but she anxiously awaited Pastor Mark’s visit every week to her home and the weekly bulletins and scriptures that he provided. Linda passed on with faith that the Lord Jesus Christ was her savior. Survivors include one daughter, Melinda O’Brien and her husband Perry of Brazilton, a grandson, Austin O’Brien of Brazilton, and a brother, Shelton Bivens and his wife Dee of Stillmore, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents Orville and Lou Shomaker, and three brothers, Johnny “Dub” Bivens, Tommy Joe Bivens, and Orville “Chris” Shomaker.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 2, 2015 at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma, Kansas with Pastor Mark Wenzelburger officiating. Linda will be cremated following the services. Burial of the cremains will be at the Large Cemetery at Cato, Kansas at a later date. Friends may call 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Bedene Chapel. Linda L. “Shomaker” Foster, 66, of Frontenac, Kansas died at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Via Christi Hospital at Pittsburg, Kansas. She had been in poor health for many years, but her death was unexpected.
