Trojans win again

BY NICK CORN

Girard hosted rival Frontenac Tuesday night for their first CNC games of the 2015-16 season. The Lady Trojans used a huge first quarter run to gain momentum, riding it for three quarters to take the victory. The boys held a comfortable halftime lead before blowing the game wide open in the third. They continued to roll to secure the win and remain undefeated.

Lady Trojans
Early on in the girls’ game both teams struggled to find a rhythm offensively, and the Lady Trojans found themselves in foul trouble, picking up their seventh team foul with 2:41 left in the first when Frontenac took a 10-8 lead. Twenty-two second later, Girard picked up their eighth foul and the Lady Raiders led 12-8.
Jacey Murphy then spurred a 15-0 Lady Trojan run with an old-fashioned three-point play. Ashley Ray then picked up a basket through contact, and Lauren Franklin picked up Ray’s missed free throw to extend the Girard lead 15-12. Sydnee Crain picked up a bucket in transition, Ray hit back-to-back shots inside, and Lauren Franklin picked up two points on another offensive board, and the Lady Trojans began building a lead 23-12 after one.
With Ray, Crain, Calea Augustin, and Kelli Cuthbertson all on the bench with two fouls, the Lady Raiders cut the lead to seven before Murphy extended the lead to nine. After Augustin went 4-4 from the free throw line, she joined Ray on the bench after each picked up their third foul of the half. Franklin would pick up her teammates, giving the Lady Trojans a 33-23 advantage with a bucket before intermission.
Girard started the third with five straight points to take a 15-point lead before the Lady Raiders would get on the scoreboard. Baskets from Murphy and Crain would twice extend the Girard lead to 17 points, but a Frontenac two made it a 44-29 game heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Trojans were content with running off the clock and looking for layups in the fourth, but would only find points from the free throw line. Frontenac would battle to cut the Girard lead to seven points twice in the quarter, but they would never get over the hump. The Lady Trojans used a modest 10-21 performance from the charity stripe in the fourth to seal the 54-44 victory.
Crain and Murphy led the Lady Trojans with 11 points apiece, while Hanson and Ray each scored 10.

Girard improved to 12-2 overall and 1-0 in CNC play.

Boys continue to roll
The boys’ game began with two points inside from Junior Lindbloom, and after a Raider answer, Laike Damman capped off a 6-0 Girard run with a trey. A deep two from Tyler Green followed by an inside bucket from Drew Davied extended the Girard lead to eight points. Lindbloom ended the quarter how he started it, and Girard led 14-6 after one.
A Garrett Bailey jumper and two free throws from Davied gave the Trojans a 12-point lead to begin the second, but the Raiders would twice cut the lead to seven points. After the Trojans regained an eleven-point advantage from two Damman free throws, back-to-back Frontenac buckets again brought the lead to seven. Lindbloom answered with a trey, and Bailey sunk two from the charity stripe to give Girard a 31-19 lead at halftime.

Both teams traded baskets early in the third, but each time the Raiders could cut the lead, Girard would respond. After Davied answered a Raider trey with one of his own, Frontenac would hit another. Lindbloom responded with his own three-point basket, sparking a 16-3 Trojan run that would lead to a 54-34 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Davied started the fourth with his second trey of the night, and successfully spurred Girard’s knockout punch. The Trojans started the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 29-point lead and went on to take a 71-45 victory.
Davied led the Trojans with 16 points, and Damman added 15. Lindbloom contributed 12 points to the winning effort. Girard improved to 14-0 on the season and 1-0 in CNC play.

Both Girard teams will continue CNC play at Southeast Friday night.
