Softball sweeps, baseball avenges late-inning stumble

The Girard Trojans took a stroll across the county line April 21 and made sure to bring the hot bats. In three out of four games, those bats crushed Titans.

The boys lost game one, 9-10, before rallying over Columbus, 14-1. The girls shut out their foes in game one, 7-0, before repeating the feat with even more offense in game two, 13-0.

Softball inflicted damage early in game one as Sydnee Crain singled, advanced on a single by Shaylun Grosstephan, and scored as her teammate went a’thievin to second base. Columbus’ pitcher walked Laney Shireman and doinked Calea Augustin, advancing Shireman to second. Jacey Murphy scored both on a double.

Grosstephan singled in the third before Shelby Smith scored a two-run homer. Lauren Franklin walked in the fourth before Murphy reached on an error. Two prompt singles from Grosstephan and Smith scored both of them. Girard threatened to add on the damage in the seventh with Columbus off the board the game ended uneventfully.

Game two saw limbo lines of runs in the first and sixth innings. Murphy started the damage with a triple before singles from Grosstephan, Kelsey Kirby and Laney Shireman and a double from Calea Augustin scored five total.

Murphy doubled in the fourth but nothing came of it. The Trojans really poured on in the sixth following a static fifth. Several walks amid singles from Smith and Kyah Ferguson and a double by Shireman altogether scored seven for Girard. Not content to leave it at that, Ashley McDonald singled in the seventh before Murphy doubled to score her.

Boys go home after seesaw series

In game one, the baseball team led Columbus by seven runs in the fifth inning, but the Titans put together a furious comeback to steal the victory.

Dakota Lopez ouldn’t get it done on the hill for Girard Trojans Varsity, taking a loss. He lasted just two-thirds of an inning, walked one, struck out two, and allowed four runs.

The bottom of the second saw Columbus take an early lead, 1-0. A single by Perry, bringing home Babbitt started the inning off.

Columbus went up for good in the sixth, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly. Girard had no answers from there and barely missed out on a sweep, losing 9-10.

The Trojans continued a sterling offensive effort in game two and this time held the Titans down. Seven runs came in the last two innings to power the 14-1 win.

Teddy Paoni helped Girard Trojans Varsity pull ahead for the duration in the sixth inning. Quintin Ausemus hit into a fielder’s choice to get on base in the sixth. He then went from first to second on a stolen base.

Tanner Stout reached base two times. He singled in the sixth inning.
