Obituary: Mary Jane Crowell

Mary Jane Crowell, 93, of Girard, passed away at 10:01 p.m., Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the WestRidge Assisted Living Center of Girard where she had made her home for twenty years. mary-jane-crowell
She was born July 4, 1923 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Paul and Leona (Brooks) Van Treese.
Her marriage to Ward Crowell during World War II occurred in Orlando, Florida September 4, 1943.  After the war they resided in Indianapolis where their two daughters were born.  When Ward was recalled to military service during the Korean War, the family lived in Sault St. Marie, Michigan and then Nuremburg, Germany before moving to Kansas in 1952.  Mary Jane was a homemaker who loved playing bridge, doing needlework, and spending summers in Colorado.  She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Fort Scott, Kansas.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband Ward, as well as, her parents and a brother, Larry Van Treese.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue Stuart of Girard and Sally DeMoss, and her husband, Dave, of Girard; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Private family services for Mary Jane Crowell will be at the National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where friends may call after 2 p.m., Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W. St. John, P.O. Box 258, Girard, Kansas 66743.
