Obituary: John J. Ziegler

   John J. Ziegler, 93, of Girard, died at 6:25 p.m., Thursday, November 2, at the Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, Kansas.
   John was born May 28, 1924 in Frontenac, Kansas, a son of John Andrew and Emma (Zanichelli) Ziegler.  The family moved to Girard in 1935 and John graduated from Girard High School in 1941. 
He served in the US Navy as a Communications Technician First Class during W.W. II from 1942 until 1946.  John owned and operated a jewelry store in Walnut, Kansas before he returned to the Navy and served during the Korean Conflict until 1952.
   He married Jeanne Owensby in 1947 and they divorced in 1972. He married Eva Adams in 1983 and she preceded him in death.
   In 1952, John owned and operated John’s Jewelry Store in Girard where he was still active until 2010.
John enjoyed being outdoors, carpentry, and operating Ham radios.
   John was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Girard, the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion, Girard, a charter member of the Steven Bennefeld Post No. 7479, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Girard, and the Girard Area Chamber of Commerce.  
   Survivors include his daughter, Jeanette Nepote, of Girard; his sons, Mike Ziegler, and his wife, LaVeta, of Girard, Joseph “Pat” Ziegler, and his wife, Becky,  of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Kurt Ziegler, and his wife, Jamie,  of Girard, Kevin Ziegler, and his wife, Debbie, of Katy, Texas, and James “Joe” Ziegler of Girard; fourteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Ziegler, of Fort Scott, Kansas; his sisters, Donna Doti, of Terra Haute, Indiana, Mary Ann Thomure, of Grove, Oklahoma, and Marie Schettler, of Plano, Texas; his step son, Joey Adams, of Girard; his step-daughters, Debbie Cameron of Frontenac, Joetta Boyd, of Topeka, Kansas, and Patti Gintner of Frontenac; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
   John was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Donald Ziegler; a granddaughter, Ann Batliner; a son-in-law, Don Nepote; a daughter-in-law, Lee Ann Ziegler; a sister, Margaret Evans Johnson; a step-daughter, Rosie Watson.
   Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 6, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Girard with Fr. Floyd McKinney officiating.  Burial will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Frontenac with Military Honors given by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Parsons, Kansas.
   The Rosary will be at 7 p.m.Sunday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.
   Friends may call at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Sunday.
