Obituary for Jo Ann “Jody” Calhoun

Jo Ann “Jody” (Critton) Calhoun, 81, formerly of Girard, died at 8:55 p.m., Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Golden Living Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.FullSizeRender (3)

Jody was born Dec. 22, 1934 in Girard, Kansas to Mamie (Frakes) and Harvey Critton. She attended Myers country school and graduated from Girard High School in 1952.

Following high school, she worked at Kansas State Teachers College as a switchboard operator. She also worked at Cherokee school and the Day and Zimmerman Army Ammunition plant before moving to Springfield, MO to work for Kraft Foods, from which she retired.

She married Albert Calhoun in 1976. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Jody had a heart for others and loved to travel. She loved to share the stories of traveling and especially her trip to Europe and the family cruise to the Bahamas. Her family has many fond memories of her on the family farm and will always remember the hours spent playing “Rook” at the kitchen table and her unique “Aunt Jody” wave.   

Survivors include one sister, Sara Dieterle of Girard and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters Martha Jones and Wilma Wondra.  

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Jan Yoger officiating. Burial will be in the Myers Cemetery southwest of Girard. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 19 or from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday, July 20 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorials to the Myers Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
