After hard losses to Fort Scott last week, the Girard Trojans’ girls and boys basketball teams bounced back and pushed their records to 9-4 on the season after victories against the Frontenac Raiders Tuesday, Jan. 30.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Trojans gave it their all to maintain a lead throughout the entire game against the Raiders.

In the first quarter, Girard entered with great energy and earned a small lead by scoring 16 and holding Frontenac to 11.

The Raiders made a small comeback before the half, scoring 13, but the Lady Trojans fought to keep the lead with 12 points.

Still leading 28-24, Girard needed a powerful performance in the third quarter to further the gap. As if on cue, the Lady Trojans scored 12 more points while allowing only nine to bring the score to 40-33.

Both teams’ defenses began to fatigue as the fourth quarter rolled around, and offenses went wild. Girard added a whopping 22 points to their score, while the Raiders could only manage 17. This brought the final score to 62-50 in Girard’s favor.

The Lady Trojans’ Sydnee Crain gave an outstanding performance in this game, scoring 35 individual points.

On the boys’ side, Girard’s fast-paced aggressiveness could not be combated by the Raiders.

The Trojans quickly earned a lead after scoring 17 points and allowing Frontenac to score only 12 in the first quarter.

Girard’s grind never slowed in the second quarter, as they added 22 points to the scoreboard. However, the Raiders remained close behind after scoring 17 more points.

With a 39-29 lead heading into the third quarter, the pressure was on Girard to maintain their momentum.

The Trojans became all-business in the fourth quarter, determined to wrap this victory up. After scoring another 22 points and allowing only 12, Girard sealed the victory with a final score of 71-55.

Girard’s Caleb Muia shined yet again on the team’s offense, scoring 27 individual points.

After these victories, Girard’s boys’ and girls’ league records were moved to 2-0.
