After one quarter of play, the game was notched up at 15-15, but a 20-point second quarter from the Lady Trojans gave Girard a 35-31 edge heading into the break. After the third, Girard was still clinging to their four-point advantage. Girard showed solid defense in the fourth quarter, only allowing 11 points to Caney, but the shots weren’t falling for the Lady Trojans as they were held to just two points. Caney took the 55-50 victory.

Megan Gray nailed four treys to lead Girard with 12 points, and a 5-5 performance from the free-throw line propelled Ashley Ray to an 11-point game. Sydnee Crain added eight points, and Calea Augustin scored seven for the Lady Trojans. With the loss, the Lady Trojans will face Cherryvale in the third-place game at 4:45 on Friday.

Championship Bound
In the boys’ game, Girard stayed hot and improved to 10-0 on the season with a dominant 20-point victory over the three-seed Fredonia. Both teams started off cold, as Girard was held to just five points and Fredonia six in the first.

Girard’s offense picked up the pace in the second quarter, scoring 13 points, and the Trojans took an 18-10 lead into halftime. In what has been a recent trend, Girard’s offense came alive in the third quarter as they scored 24 points to stretch their lead. The Trojans were outscored by a point in the fourth, 14-15, but the damage had been done, and Girard cruised to a 56-36 victory.

Laike Damman led the attack for Girard, scoring 14 points on the night, including two three-point baskets. Tyler Green added 13 for the Trojans, and Drew Davied scored 12.

With the win, Girard will face the one-seed Independence at 8:15 Friday night. A Championship match-up where the Trojans will look to avenge a loss from last year, in the exact same scenario. Independence took a 55-20 victory over Girard in the championship game just one season ago.
