BASEBALL OPENER: Early leads end in losses

The Girard Trojan baseball team came up short in both games against Parsons Tuesday, March 28.

In the first contest, the Trojans were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead due to two RBI’s by Jake Bennett.

However, the Trojans would struggle in the third and fourth innings, as Parsons was able to add two runs in each.

With the score at 4-2 entering the final inning, Parsons added one more run, while Girard was unable to find the scoreboard again.

The score of the first game sat at 5-2 in Parsons’ favor.

The second contest proved to be much of the same for Girard.

Early success allowed the Trojans to get out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the second thanks to two RBIs by Ty Norris.

However, in the third, Parsons hit a deep ball over the fence while the bases were loaded. The grand slam put the score at 4-2 Parsons at the end of the third.

Girard was unable to find the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest. Parsons would go on to add seven more runs in the final three innings, leaving Girard with an 11-2 loss.

Dakota Lopez pitched 4 and 1/3 innings for the Trojans, striking out four batters in the process. Brendan Schmidt and Wes Jahay also each added a strikeout in relief.

Norris recorded the only two RBIs in the contest for Girard.

Girard begins the season 0-2 and will look to bounce back at Riverton on Monday, April 3. The Labette County game scheduled for today has been postponed.
