Area man drowns in strip pits near Radley

On June 3, 2018 at approximately 3:50 p.m., The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a man who had fallen out of a small boat while fishing in a pit. The pit is located west of 190th on 590 Ave. in rural Crawford County.

Upon arrival Deputies were notified that two men in their 80’s were fishing when one of the men fell into the water.  The second man went into the water but was unable to retrieve the fisherman that went under. Neither man was wearing a life jacket.  The second man had to swim to shore and go to a nearby house on foot for help.

Emergency responders were unable to locate the missing fisherman.  Divers and rescue boats also responded to the scene and searched the last known location of the victim. After an extensive search, recovery efforts were suspended late in the evening on Sunday and were scheduled to resume first thing Monday morning.

Monday afternoon at approximately 1:20 p.m., emergency crews recovered the victim identified as Johnnie Bracket. His body was taken to Kansas City for an autopsy.

Arma Fire, Baker Fire, Frontenac Fire, Pittsburg Fire, Crawford County EMS, Frontenac PD, Girard PD, and Officers from Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.
